History of the Dominicans (Order of Preachers)

The Order of Preachers (Dominicans) was founded by Saint Dominic de Guzmán in 1216 and formally approved by Pope Honorius III on December 22, 1216.
Saint Dominic established the Order to preach the truth of the Catholic faith and to combat heresies through sound doctrine, prayer, and a life of apostolic poverty.

The Dominicans dedicate themselves to four pillars: prayer, study, community, and preaching.
From their beginning, they have been closely linked to Catholic education, theological scholarship, and the defense of the faith.

Saint Dominic also promoted devotion to the Holy Rosary, a powerful prayer for the faithful.
Throughout history, the Order has given the Church great saints, including Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Martin de Porres, and Saint Rose of Lima.

Today, Dominicans continue their mission worldwide, serving Christ and His Church by proclaiming the Gospel of Truth.

Their motto remains:
“Veritas” — Truth.
